Becoming saved by God is something that had caused me such anxiety when I was young. Although I had gone through the process, I continuously found myself doubting if I were truly saved. After I sinned again — which is to be expected as we are all sinners — I would find myself going through the process of being saved all over again with an intense panic rising up inside my body. I feared so much that I was not truly saved by God, despite understanding from the Word and fellow believers that I was.
A lot of people doubt if they are truly saved or not. And a lot of people don’t even know where to begin on how to be saved.
With this understanding, I wanted to share the three steps you must take in order to be saved by God. If you fear that you may not be saved or are hoping to be saved for the first time, follow along with these three steps. Pray to God as you go through this process and write or speak aloud through each step for the best possible experience.
Admit that you are a sinner.
We may not realize that we have sinned, but it is important to consider how God views sin and what His definition of sin is. Have you ever lied? Have you ever looked upon another person lustfully? These are both sins and there are many, many others. God asks for perfection, and as human beings, none of us are perfect. The only person to ever walk the earth who was perfect is Jesus.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
To be saved you must recognize that you have fallen short of God’s standard of perfection. You must confess that you are, in fact, a sinner.
Believe in the Good News.
Although God believes in just punishment, He does not want any of us to eternally die. And this is exactly why God sent His one and only Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. That day on the cross, Jesus took our place. He took on the weight of our sins and perished for us, so that we may have eternal life through Him.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16
The Good News is that Jesus gave His life for ours! The Good News is that Jesus bared the weight of our sins and took on the sentence of death that we deserve. To be saved you must believe that this is true and that you can have eternal life through Him.
Commit your life to God.
The last step to becoming saved by God is to commit your life to Him. You must dedicate your entire being to serving God, His children, and His kingdom. Jesus gave His life for ours, so it would make perfect sense that we would spend our lives wholly and completely committed to Him.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones." Proverbs 3:5-8
