“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” –Albert Einstein
Mistakes build character, right? As a common mistake-maker, I would happen to agree with that statement. Honestly, I believe that there is a lot to learn from the mistakes that we make.
Our mistakes shape who we become in the future.
However, can you refer to it as a mistake if it is a behavior you continuously repeat? As Albert Einstein famously said, repeating the same thing but doing it repeatedly is the definition of insanity. And guess what? There is no better time than the present to initiate change! Therefore, here are ten habits that you need to break right now.
Not Caring For Your Skin
You do not have to purchase very expensive products to care for your skin, but you should definitely create a skin care routine. Make sure that you wash your face, moisturize, wear sunscreen, and avoid picking at pimples… and anything else you can think of!
You may have young skin now, but how poorly you treat it while you are young will show when you are older. So, stop procrastinating on your skin care!
Saying “Sorry” Constantly
I am extremely guilty of this. For what seems like my entire life, I have been a person who apologizes for literally everything.
Oh, I accidentally stepped in your way? Sorry.
Did I not answer your call? Sorry.
Did I choose to stay in on a Friday night? Sorry.
Oh, I got in the way of your car and that’s why I got ran over? Sorry.
Okay, that last one never actually happened. But it proves my point about how often I, and many others, apologize. We apologize for anything and everything, and honestly, it needs to stop. There is no need to be “sorry” for everything. Rather than using the word carelessly, we should start using it when it matters and when we actually feel apologetic.
Carelessly Using Credit Cards
Dear credit card debt, please erase yourself.
If only it were that easy, right? If you take nothing else away from this post, please understand this: credit cards are dangerous.
If you are a responsible adult and know that you are capable of only using your credit card for important things that you cannot casually pay for, go for it. However, if you are anything like me and know that you will carelessly swipe that card to get cute fall decorations, stay away from them.
Credit cards are fun to use because you do not have to worry about that money in the moment, but working that debt down is so difficult.
Recently, I asked my fiancé, “It’s 2019. Why are people still smoking cigarettes?”. If you are offended by this question, I will not overuse the term ‘sorry’ but I am genuinely concerned that we are continuing to destroy our lungs and risk so many health-related issues for smoking.
Stop it! You are never going to feel ready to quit – you just have to do it.
Not Chasing Your Dreams
Sure, your dream may seem crazy to people. But guess what? That is why it is your dream and not theirs.
Remember this: there will always be a reason not to do something, but at a certain point you just have to do it if you truly want it.
Not Working Out
Your body and mind need you to work out! As I have mentioned in a previous blog post, no matter what type of exercise you engage in, you should get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day.
The best part about exercising during the internet age is that you do not even have to pay for a gym membership. There are plenty of at-home workout routines available for free on YouTube! Find one that works for you and stick to it.
Eating Out More Than Cooking At Home
Once again, I am guilty. However, really think about what you are putting into your body day in and day out. Consider how much more bloated you feel after eating dinner at a restaurant versus how your body feels after eating a dinner at home.
Although you may not feel like cooking, it is important to cook your own meals at home.
You can get offended or call me lame, but blacking out is not cool. If you want to go out and have some drinks, go for it! But when you drink to the point of blacking out, danger enters.
You may have made it this far without getting into harm’s way, but there is so much dangerous in becoming inebriated to the point where you cannot even remember what happened. Not only is it dangerous, but it can cause a lot of confusion and can add stress to your life.
Staying In Toxic Relationships
You can love from a distance. Stop letting people convince you to stay in toxic relationships.
If you find yourself in a toxic relationship, create a boundary with that person. You can love them, but you also need to love yourself enough to know when a relationship may be bad for you.
Thinking People Dislike You
Yesterday, one of my colleagues made the following comment: “We always think that people are judging us or that they don’t like us, but that look on their face usually has absolutely nothing to do with us”.
If someone has not told you they dislike you, do not automatically assume that. By assuming this, you create tension between you and a person that you could potentially have a great relationship with. And that negativity is not good for your mind or soul.
