How To Practice Self-Care

There have been moments in my life where I have cried over nothing, where I have snapped at people for doing nothing out of the ordinary, and where I have simply just not felt quite right.Looking back on those moments, what did they all have in common? I wasn’t taking care of myself.

What does self-care mean to you?

Something that I love about the concept of self-care is that it is different for everyone. Some people like to go on runs, – if the inability to breathe is relaxing to you, then more power to you – some people like to read, some people like to cook, and so on. There really is no end to the possibilities of what self-care is. Self-care is whatever makes your heart sing and helps your mind find peace.

What if you can’t find time for self-care?

Let me ask you something: what’s popular on Netflix right now? What is everyone on Facebook angry about today?

There is always time, especially for something as critical as caring for yourself. If it is necessary, carve out 30 minutes of binging Netflix to make sure that you are okay. I know it’s hard because Netflix is so tantalizing, but trust me, it will still be there in an hour.

What can self-care look like?

If you don’t hear about self-care often and you’ve never practiced it, I want to share a bit about what self-care looks like to help you out! Personally, I do the following things for self-care:

  • Journal
  • Take my dog to the park
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Read (either a novel or in the Word)
  • Go out to dinner with my boyfriend

When do I do these things? Simply whenever I find the time! Sometimes I wake up early and do these things and sometimes I wait until the evening.

Make it your own.

The beautiful thing about self-care is that you don’t have to follow another person’s way of doing things. Customize it, base this time around your schedule, and discover the activities that bring you peace of mind and healing.
